Three days after their victory in the legislative elections, the ultra-conservatives in power voted in favor of penalizing sex education. The PiS deputies, Law and Justice, have even increased in first reading the prison sentences incurred, from 3 to 5 years, in the new version of the bill.

With our correspondent in Warsaw, Thomas Giraudeau

Several thousand people gathered Wednesday night in major cities of Poland to protest against this text. As in Warsaw, where there were a thousand in front of Parliament. At the microphone, the organizers of the gathering denounce a medieval vision of Pro-prawo do Zycia, the pro-life association at the initiative of the bill penalizing sex education. She is convinced that these lessons deprave children, teach them masturbation and even encourage homosexuality.

Antonina Lewandowska gives sex education workshops in schools in Warsaw, and could therefore incur a prison sentence. " We do not try to lie or indoctrinate children but to give accurate information, confirmed by science, " she insists. During the workshops, we teach what sexuality is, we talk about sexual orientations, protection against diseases, contraception. We also learn what consent is and how to report sexual assault. "

Very conservative society

In a very Catholic Polish society, this type of course is now optional, little taught. While a law on education imposes them yet in all schools.

" We have Catholic and very conservative friends," says Anita, a 15-year-old high school student. At home, they are taught that sex education in school is not good. They do not receive any basic sex education from their parents. That's why we need it at school, so this law should not be passed. "

For the moment, the text has been referred to a parliamentary committee. If the law passes, Antonina, the educator, intends to complain to the European Court of Human Rights.
