Teachers who teach notions of sex education in Poland could face up to five years in prison if a bill on pedophilia is carried out , which is supported by the Polish ruling party, Law and Justice, with an absolute majority in Parliament.
The norm, which is already debated in the Lower House, says in its statement that it intends to avoid "promoting pedophilia" in Polish schools and that students "are encouraged to be sexually active."
This bill responds to a popular initiative promoted by the Catholic Foundation "Stop the Pedophilia", and seeks to avoid the apology of pedophilia by proposing imprisonment, among others, to educators who promote pedophile behavior among children under 18.
Polish legislation places the age of sexual consent at 15 years.
Today a demonstration has been organized in the city of Poznan to ask that sex education not be criminalized in Polish schools. "We want to educate, not indoctrinate" is the motto of the protesters.
It will be the first concentration against the Polish Government of the Law and Justice party after last Sunday's elections, where the nationalist-conservative formation revalidated its absolute majority in Parliament.
For the Polish Society of Sexology, "although the term 'sexual education' is not explicitly mentioned in the bill, the main objective of the rule will be precisely the criminalization of sex education, since the authors of the project justify it alleging that "will provide legal protection to children and youth against sexual depravity."
