The Turkish offensive against the Kurds in northeastern Syria began after US President Donald Trumd ordered a withdrawal of the small US force in the region.

The decision to leave Syria also means leaving the Kurdish forces that fought against IS on behalf of the United States without support and to their fate.

"Massive criticism"

Carina Bergfeldt, SVT's US correspondent, says that it is not uncommon for the US president, whoever it is, to be criticized for his decisions on foreign policy.

- But the massive criticism we see here in the country now, it is unusual. The decision to withdraw from Syria is described as impulsive and thoughtless, she says.

The criticism comes from Democrats, Republicans, military on the spot, military advisers and military experts.

- President Trump and the White House are defending the decision, but at the same time Trump has called Edogan and demanded a ceasefire. They also face sanctions against Turkey, she says.
