Where do we stand 6 months after the fire that devastated part of the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral under the eyes of thousands of passers-by shocked by the collapse of the spire of the building, April 15, 2019?

A huge project was implemented to consolidate the cathedral before undertaking restoration work. If consolidation works progress, the structure of the cathedral is still in danger since its stability is still not assured. And even though two-thirds of the consolidation work has already been completed, what remains to be done is probably the most difficult.

• The hardest part remains to be done: dismantle the 500-ton scaffold that has melted

In addition to removing the pieces of masonry deemed unstable and the construction of a hat on the roof to ensure the tightness of the building, which is a problem today is the dismantling of the huge 500-tonne scaffolding which was mounted before the fire around the arrow. A scaffolding that with the extreme heat of the fire of the frame has literally melted and welded together each of the rods that compose it. The operation promises to be long and particularly painful.

As a result, hopefully and weather permitting, it is only in the late spring of 2020 that the consolidation work will be completed. As for the reconstruction itself, it will be necessary to wait until 2021. The time that the architectural project is validated and also that the calls for tenders are concluded. It is therefore impossible to know for now whether the presidential promise of a reconstruction project in 5 years will be held.

• Already 922 million euros in donations and pledges

Franck Riester, the Minister of Culture announced this Tuesday, October 15: 922 million euros of donations and pledges have already been received to rebuild the cathedral. Donations from nearly 350,000 donors in 152 countries around the world. Today, of this sum, 104 million have already been paid.

In addition, among the 3 foundations responsible for raising funds under the national subscription, the heritage foundation which has collected 223 million euros alone, has so far not found any discontinuance from companies and great patrons. Better, according to her, 80% of the promises have already been concretized through donations or conventions. But the Minister of Culture to clarify that " it is still too early to say whether the amount of donations will be sufficient, the state will assume its responsibilities, we will not leave Notre-Dame plan ."

• Lead contamination: the diocese, the regional health agency and the prefect of Paris reassure on the risks

Another point raises questions about this project: it is the lead contamination of the inhabitants and the workers on the site, following the fire. While sensors installed inside the cathedral have revealed significant lead levels, the prefect of Paris, Michel Cadot nevertheless wanted reassuring. Monday, he assured that the site is today completely sealed vis-à-vis its environment in terms of lead risk.

The same goes for the diocese, where Monsignor Benoit Sinety, representative of the Archbishop of Paris thought it worth recalling at a press conference on Tuesday: " The lead is heavy. This is a 6th grade physics class. And so to be able to get intoxicated with lead, it should be absorbed. And absorb lead that is on the ground, apart from licking it I do not see very well how we can do .
