Thousands of Catalans took to the streets this Monday, October 14, after the announcement of the condemnation of nine separatists for their role in the attempt of secession of Catalonia in 2017. Clashes erupted at the airport of Barcelona.

Clashes erupted on Monday between protesters and police at the Barcelona airport, where thousands of independence activists had gathered to block it. The police repeatedly charged to repel the hundreds of protesters trying to break into the airport.

These clashes left 13 injured, according to the emergency services, but not seriously. The airport manager indicates that about 20 flights have been canceled, while travelers have been forced to walk with their luggage on the blocked highway to catch their flight.

Separatist activists have also cut roads and railroads throughout the region. These demonstrations were organized at the call of a platform called Democratic Tsunami, in anticipation of the sentences pronounced against the independence leaders judged since February 12 for the attempt of secession of Catalonia in 2017.

Nine of them were sentenced on Monday to sentences ranging from nine to thirteen years in prison by the Spanish Supreme Court. On October 1, 2017, despite the ban on justice, they held a self-determination referendum enamelled with police violence. On October 27, 2017, they proclaimed the independence of Catalonia voted by the Catalan Parliament .

After the judgment, a new European arrest warrant has been issued by the Supreme Court against the former head of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, who has been living in exile in Belgium since October 2017.
