The Iraqi National Security Council said in a statement that it has directed units of the Iraqi army and the Popular Mobilization to secure the international border with Syria, while continuing the military operation carried out by Turkey in northern Syria under the name of the spring peace operation.

This came during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi to discuss the Turkish military operation in northern Syria and its possible repercussions on Iraq.

In a related context, Qais al-Khazali, Secretary-General of the Movement of Asaib Ahl al-Haq - a faction of the Popular Mobilization - that what is happening on the Iraqi-Syrian border is a major and direct threat to Iraqi national security.

He added in a tweet on Twitter that the state and the relevant agencies to follow what is happening and take the required steps as soon as possible.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammad Ali al-Hakim condemned what he called the Turkish attack on Syria during an emergency meeting of the Arab League at the invitation of Egypt.

He said the attack "is a serious escalation that will exacerbate humanitarian crises, increase the suffering of the Syrian people and strengthen the ability of terrorists to reorganize their remnants."

On the other hand, the former governor of Nineveh Atheel Nujaifi support for the operation of the "spring of peace" in northern Syria, stressing that it will eliminate the most important causes of extremism on the borders of Iraq.

Nujaifi said in a tweet via "Twitter" that the operation "spring of peace" is an end to the situation of demographic change suffered by Sunni Arab areas east of the Euphrates.

He added that the operation would "eliminate the most important causes of extremism that has hit the western borders of Iraq."

Nujaifi is a leader in the "Iraqi decision" coalition, which is represented by 13 deputies in parliament out of 329.

The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced last Wednesday the launch of his country's army in cooperation with the Syrian National Army, Operation "spring of peace" in the area east of the Euphrates River in northern Syria.
