11 October 2019 The institutional turmoil that Russiagate is causing in Italy has certainly not gone unnoticed overseas. US sources with direct knowledge of the visits made to Rome by Justice Minister William Barr and the prosecutor John Durham express to Adnkronos a certain "surprise" for what is happening in our country. Barr, they explain, met with Italian intelligence chiefs as FBI summit supervisor and director "of the Justice Department's activities, FBI which in addition to an internal investigative division also has an" intelligence division ".

It is therefore in this capacity, the sources insist, that due to the delicacy of the story they asked to remain anonymous, which Barr requested and obtained the meetings that took place in August and September, both in the Piazza Dante headquarters. And that is why Barr and the premier Giuseppe Conte, always according to US sources, "have never had any direct contact, not even by telephone".

It is theoretically possible, but this source is not able to confirm it, that there could have been a direct contact on the subject between Conte and President Donald Trump (although there would be no evidence at the moment) that he would have anticipated the premier Barr's visit to Italy. If the version coming from the USA is correct, it is possible that this could be the line of defense that Conte will hold before the Copasir in the hearing of the next days.

Going back to the Barr meetings in Italy, which was also attended by the prosecutor John Durham, US sources report that the requests of the attorney general were clear: do you have elements to show that in 2016 there was a conspiracy against Donald Trump? What elements do you have about the Maltese professor Joseph Mifsud? It should be remembered that the latter, according to the reconstruction in the Russiagate report by special prosecutor Robert Mueller, in Rome, in a meeting at Link University, allegedly "hooked" George Papadopoulos, then advisor of Trump's electoral campaign, to offer him material "dirty" on Hillary Clinton, owned by the Russians.

The thesis of Barr's and Durham's 'counter-investigation', still in the preliminary investigation phase, is that in 2016 the Obama Administration, through the US 'Deep State' and the competition of friendly governments of the time, including the Italian ones , he prepared a 'poisoned meatball' for the then candidate Trump, to keep him in check in case of election.

At Barr and Durham, our intelligence chiefs said clearly, the US source said, that "there is no evidence", at least in Italy, to credit the conspiracy thesis.

As for Mifsud, who disappeared into thin air, the heads of our services told Barr and Durham of "not having any information" on him. In turn, the heads of our services have asked the two US interlocutors if they had any elements on Mifsud that would involve Italy. The famous "audio" in which, according to some reconstructions, the Maltese professor would call our country into question. According to the source, from Barr and Durham, the answer would have been negative.
