Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelinksy, who was a well-known representative before his election this spring to the country's highest office, has vowed to inject a new kind of politics into the former Soviet republic.

Thursday did what no politician had ever done before when he held a press conference that lasted more than 12 hours and was announced by the National Registry Agency for the world's longest records.

Eight hours after Zielinski's marathon press conference began, his most important meeting with the press since he came to power, an IAEA representative stood to make the announcement.

The 41-year-old president, surprised by his reaction, said he was a humble man who did not like celebrations.

The previous figure of the longest press conference is held by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who held a conference that lasted more than seven hours, according to Ukrainian media.

Zielinski's number must be endorsed by an international body before it can be officially adopted.

The press conference was held Thursday in a hall in the center of Kiev, attended by hundreds of local and international journalists, who alternated in batches around the president's table to ask questions.

Zelinsky spoke extensively on issues such as the war in eastern Ukraine, relations with Russia and his telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump, which led to an investigation into the president seeking to isolate him.

Zelinsky told Ukrainian media that he took up our right to strengthen his vocal cords before the conference.
