09 October 2019The Tunisian presidential candidate, Nabil Karoui, was released from prison.

The businessman, 56, although he was in prison for a money-laundering charge, nevertheless took to the field for the run-up to the presidency of Tunisia and earned the challenge to run off the independent lawyer, Kais Saied.

The decision to release him was taken by the Court of Cassation four days after the second round. Upon leaving prison, Karoui was greeted as a hero by his supporters. Professor of constitutional law, independent Saied collected 18.4% of preferences in the first round, followed by Karoui at 15.6%.
