American John B. Goodnav, Stanley Whitingham of Japan and Akira Yoshino of Japan won the 2019 Nobel Chemistry Prize for developing lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (SRS) said on Wednesday.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry is the third Nobel Prize to be announced this week.

Prizes are awarded annually to the winners on 10 December, the day of the death of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel.

Each year, the prize is worth 9 million Swedish crowns ($ 908,000).
