Legislation on child marriage in Sweden has become tougher, in January 2019 Sweden stopped recognizing child marriage entered into abroad. Although there is still some to work with according to Issis Melin.

- Child marriage is difficult to detect when they happen abroad. It is difficult to know who has been affected and few of them dare to seek help, says Issis Melin, school curator at Västerås City.

"It is important to raise awareness of the problem"

A trend that Melin has seen is that young people know what honor-related violence and oppression mean. This has led to those who met her directly saying that this is what they are exposed to.

- It is important to raise awareness among young people about the problem. Because a youth knows this, they can, for example, help his friend who is affected, says Issis Melin.

Therefore, many choose not to register

In most cases, it is a difficult process to go through if you have been exposed to honor-related violence or oppression. This is because the individual may have to stand up to a whole group, clan or family.

- There are usually many perpetrators and there is so much responsibility on the individual who is alone in it. Because of this, many choose not to report, but continue to live in oppression, says Issis Melin.
