The drug habit survey among school students is done every three years and this year around 7000 pupils responded, that is about 83 percent of pupils in grade 9 and 81 percent of high school students.

The result shows that alcohol continues to decline high school students and for high school students it has even halved since 2004. In Grade 9, now every third student states that they have been drinking alcohol in the past year. But when it comes to drug use, the numbers are at about the same level since previous investigations.

"Yes, drugs are at about the same level all the time, it is every fifth student in high school who has ever used drugs, it is our main job to get that figure down," says Ulla Kungur, development director of drug addiction studies, Gothenburg city.

No clear support for the police picture

The survey does not provide clear support for the police's view that heavier drugs are increasing in general among young people. However, narcotics may be more common in a smaller, vulnerable group.

- We meet the risk group just like the police and there Tramadol increases, even cocaine increases among those we meet but the big thing is cannabis, says Kristoffer Lindgren, coordinator at Mini-Maria.
