There are state roads, municipal roads and individual roads. Generally speaking, roads that connect towns and also thoroughfares are usually state roads. Municipal roads usually have street names and are located within a municipality, for example in a residential area. But the very largest road network in Sweden consists of individual roads and they are the responsibility of private individuals.

- When it comes to state roads, the Swedish Transport Administration handles maintenance work and determines the speed limits. But even if we have a sign that says 80 km / h, it is not safe to drive in 80. Highest permissible speed under good conditions, it is what we sign with, says Lennart Helsing press communicator at the Swedish Transport Administration.

Responsibility for the municipal roads is shared between the county administrative board and the municipality. The County Administrative Board is usually responsible for roads outside urban areas with speed limits up to 70 km / h, for example, the County Administrative Board is responsible for.

- It is a bit complicated, it is the detailed plan that governs the question whether it is the municipality or the county administrative board that is responsible for a road, but it is easy to check who controls what if you call the municipality, he says.

Views on roads

If you are unsure of who to contact when you have comments on a road, Lennart Helsing at the Swedish Transport Administration thinks that it is good to hear from the Swedish Transport Administration regardless of the road.

- If you have comments on a speed then a written request with motives is needed, it is not enough just to call customer service and tell. If the road does not belong to us, we will forward the letter to the correct body.
