After the Sunday presbytery, Pope Francis celebrates this Sunday morning the opening Mass of the Special Synod for the Amazon.

With our special correspondent in Rome, Geneviève Delrue

For three weeks from Monday to October 27, more than 110 Latin American bishops, but also experts will work together on this region of the world emblematic of ecological challenges. But this synod is not only environmental . It will address social, economic, cultural issues taking the subject from the angle of "integral ecology".

If the Vatican is particularly interested in the Amazon, it is because not only this vast region of Latin America is the lung of humanity, that its indigenous populations are threatened but also because, as one of the key men of this synod, the Peruvian Jesuit and Cardinal Pedro Barreto, " the Amazon concentrates the problems of humanity " in that it questions the brutality of our economic development systems, our ways of life and consumption .

The Amazon also questions the Church in its model of evangelization in the face of the dynamism of the evangelical churches and the lack of priests that could lead it to make some exceptions to the rule of celibacy: namely to proceed to the ordination of mature men married those who are called the Latin word "viri probati".

What I expect from the synod a part of nature defense to resist the invasions of those who want to extract the ore, destroy the forest (...) and a component on human persons. We must give greater importance to those who live in the forest.
