• Legislative: fear of a new record of abstention marks the elections in Portugal
  • Elections: The polls foresee a historic defeat of the Portuguese right

The Socialist Party led by the current Prime Minister, António Costa, wins the legislative elections held today in Portugal on a day marked by high abstention, according to the provisional polls released at the close of the polls.

Costa would get between 34 and 40% of the votes, according to these preliminary polls, while the current opposition leader, Rui Rio, of the Social Democratic Party (PSD, center-right), would move on a fork between 24 and 31%.

The legislative elections that the next Government will leave concluded at 20.00 local time (19.00 GMT) with the closing of the polling stations in the Azores archipelago.

This Sunday 10,811,436 Portuguese voters were called to the polls in Portugal, a country that holds national elections in which the ruling Socialist Party (PS) starts as a favorite. At 4:00 p.m., only 38% of the voters had voted , compared to 44% registered at the same time four years ago.

The polls predicted that Prime Minister António Costa will have a second term at the helm of the Portuguese Executive, while the Portuguese right could suffer a historic defeat. However, the results predicted by the polls could be altered by the low participation of voters, who abstained in increasing numbers with each election held since the arrival of democracy.
