Jordan's Foreign Ministry on Sunday summoned the charge d'affaires of Israel's embassy in Amman and handed him a protest note over the continued detention of two Jordanians for more than a month, an official source said.

Spokesman Sufian al-Qudah said in a statement that the ministry summoned the charge d'affaires of the Israeli embassy in Amman and "reiterated its request for the immediate release of citizen Heba Abdel Baqi, as well as Abdel Rahman Merhi."

"Until this is achieved, the ministry has demanded that they should be provided with adequate conditions of detention and due process, consistent with international law and international human rights standards, and held the Israeli authorities responsible for their safety."

The judges pointed out that "the ministry and the embassy (Jordan) in Tel Aviv are following up on a daily basis this case."

On September 10, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry summoned Israel's ambassador to Amman to demand the immediate release of Abdel Baqi and Marei after the Israeli authorities arrested them as they crossed the King Hussein Bridge in the area between the two countries.

Amman says Hiba Abdel Baqi was arrested on August 20. Abdel Rahman Merhi was arrested on 2 September.

Jordan has been in a peace treaty with Israel since 1994.
