Sylvie Goulard, candidate nominated by France for a post of commissioner, during her hearing at the European Parliament, October 2, 2019. KENZO TRIBOUILLARD / AFP

After a first unconvincing hearing before the European Parliament on Wednesday (October 2nd), Sylvie Goulard will have to answer a new series of written questions.

With our correspondent in Brussels , Joana Hostein

The Frenchwoman appointed to the post of European Commissioner for Internal Market, Industry and Defense did not convince MEPs during her hearing .

She will therefore have to answer written questions asked by all political families, except the one to which she belongs.

" Your answers and your commitments were not clear enough ," begins the letter to Sylvie Goulard .

The 10-page letter therefore asks the French candidate for details on the size of her portfolio, which some MEPs consider " too broad ".

Not enough questions

Single market, industrial policy, digital, defense; so many substantive issues that belong to the portfolio of the nominee and that were not sufficiently deepened at the hearing, regretted the parliamentarians.

" What will you do if you are indicted while you are a commissioner, would you resign? "

MEPs expect clear commitments from Sylvie Goulard, while she is the subject of two investigations into the case of allegedly fictitious jobs of assistants MEPs MoDem.

Without a satisfactory answer, the French could be convened for a second hearing next week, and some also mention a reduction in the size of his portfolio.
