The organizers of the Rugby World Cup in Japan announced Friday that they sold 1.8 million tickets for the 48 matches of the competition and thus achieved their goal.

Before the start of the World Cup, the organizers claimed that 96% of the tickets had been sold.

"Following the optimization of the stadium configuration and some returns from trading partners and participating nations, a certain amount of tickets are still on sale," the organizing committee said.

According to World Rugby President Bill Beaumont, the tournament "has won the hearts and minds of the nation and the rugby family".

At the previous World Cup in 2015 in England, some 2.47 million tickets had been sold.

In Japan, prizes range between 2,000 yen (17 euros) for the match United States - Tonga and 100,000 yen (853 euros) for the best places in the final.
