March 20, 2019 "The witness is in the hands of the colleagues of Alpi and Hrovatin, of Italian journalists, of those who feel it is a duty to honor that commitment of coherent professionalism that, in Mogadishu, the killers wanted to strike. Freedom of the press is the thermometer of a country's democratic health. It must be cultivated and strengthened every day and the responsibility of democratic institutions is central, so that the principles of our Constitution and international declarations on the subject are always promoted ". This was declared by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the killing of Ilaria Alpi and Miran Hrovatin.

"The killing of Ilaria Alpi and Miran Hrovatin profoundly tears the civil conscience of our country 25 years later and sounds dramatic warning of the price that can be paid in serving the cause of freedom of information - continues the Head of State - On this sad anniversary, I address a thought of solidarity to the families of the two journalists, awarded the Gold Medal for Civil Merit of the Italian Republic. The commitment of family members against reticence and misleading, after the immense pain suffered, deserved and deserves great respect and represents a duty of the Republic ".

Mogadishu 20 March 1994
Mogadishu, 20 March 1994: Ilaria Alpi and Miran Hrovatin have recently returned to their hotel, the Sahafi. They decide to go out through the 'green line', the green line that since 1991 has divided the city into two. One part is controlled by Ali Mahdi, the other by General Aidid. They reach the Amana hotel and there are only a few minutes left. As soon as they left, at 3 pm, a car carrying a command composed of Somali men blocked the off-road vehicle in which the Tg3 correspondent and her operator were traveling.

A few seconds and all hell breaks out. Only the driver and the escort man will survive on board the Toyota off-road vehicle. Miran is found dead, but Ilaria is still alive. The Italian entrepreneur Giancarlo Marocchino and some of his men take them to the old port of Mogadishu, where a military doctor will try to give her the first care, but in vain. It is the point of no return, the truth will never have to come out. At least until today.

"Ilaria Alpi and Miran Hrovatin. Misdirections and hidden truths", another book on the story
Twenty-five years after the death of Ilaria Alpi and Miran Hrovatin, a group of journalists retraces the tragic story, telling some of the truths hitherto untold. "Ilaria Alpi and Miran Hrovatin. Misdirections and hidden truths" is curated by Luigi Grimaldi (of 'Le Iene') and Luciano Scalettari (of 'Famiglia Cristiana'): it is the latest investigation - published Round Robin Editrice - in bookstores from 21 March and also collects the contributions of Marco Birolini, Francesco Cavalli, Massimiliano Giannantoni, Mariangela Gritta Grainer, Alessandro Rocca, Roberto
Scardova and Maurizio Torrealta.

Finally opened archives and traces that lead to the true eyewitnesses of the double murder. Why didn't anyone really want to look for them? A house of cards set up to build a scapegoat and blame an innocent man who ended up in prison for 17 years. Who wanted to silence the story and what did Ilaria really know? What is the function of a commission of inquiry, tailored and consultants brought to the door or finished under investigation because they cannot be controlled. These are the questions the authors try to answer.

Not just a double homicide in a country at war, as stated by Carlo Taormina. "That of Ilari Alpi and Miran Hrovatin - the authors maintain - was a full-fledged execution. But only now did they find the traces to indicate who knew, who saw, who kept silent and bring everything back to the person who chose and commissioned the death of the two reporters ".
