A survey sent by SVT News to retailers of sex toys shows that sales have increased dramatically in recent years. At the same time, it also shows that the range of sex toys for women is much greater than for men.

At the online store Vuxen.se, which specializes in intimate products, the sales of products aimed at women are about 50 percent, sex toys for couples about 35 percent and 15 percent for men.

- We definitely see that there is a difference. It is still not as acceptable for men to buy a loose vagina as it is for a woman to own a vibrator, says Michael Ahlén, CEO of Vuxen.se.

He believes, among other things, that this is because men themselves have a negative attitude towards the purchase of sex toys.

- I think many guys see it as a failure to need a toy to be able to come, he says.

Sex dolls and vaginas are popular

Even at the competitor Mshop, the supply is unequal. However, the store has more male customers who buy sex toys than women. However, they not only buy sex toys designed for men but also for women.

- If you look purely at product level, there are significantly more people for women than for men, says Evelina Odle, PR manager at Mshop.

She believes that this is partly because there is a higher pressure on sex toys among women than men. At the same time, she points out that quite a few new types of products are being launched just for men as demand grows.

Suzann Larsdotter, a sexologist at RFSU, thinks that a lot has happened with the selection on the sex toy market.

The retailers that SVT News has been in contact with tell about an increased interest in so-called masturbators or masturbation products for men.

They are often designed with some technology that allows them to stimulate automatically, but also includes classic "vaginas". Demand for so-called sex dolls has also increased in recent years.

"Men's sexuality is considered ugly"

The fact that there is a greater selection of sex toys for women than for men does not surprise Suzann Larsdotter, an authorized sexologist at RFSU.

- Women are in greater need of sex toys than men as they are not as easily satisfied with penetration sex. The absolute majority of men orgasm at sex, but not women.

She believes that it is one of several reasons why the supply looks different. Another factor is that we look at men and women's sexuality differently.

- We regard women's sexuality as a little finer and kinder, while men's sexuality is considered more dangerous and "ugly". These are ideals that we must problematize, ”she says.
