INFO EUROPE 1

An overwhelming majority of mayors consulted by the Senate say they are affected by insecurity. Europe 1 reveals on Wednesday the results of the consultation, before the official publication. They confirm that many mayors have faced threats or even violence.

The Senate Committee on the Law sent a questionnaire to the 36,000 mayors of France from 13 August. 3,812 mayors answered the questionnaire, that is 10,9% of the mayors of France. With a constant: 100% of the respondents have already been the victim of incivilities, threats or even aggression. Most often using their policing power: awkward parking, wild garbage dump, or illegal land occupation.

Injuries and death threats

The consultation mentions insults, death threats, using a knife or fork. Many mayors do not dare to complain. The Senate calls for better protection of mayors and a better reception of the latter in the police station or gendarmerie.

Leaders to improve the security of mayors presented this morning after the revelation of the figures will be submitted to the government under the law on the status of the elected who arrives next week in the Senate. The Senate initiative was launched after the death of the mayor of Signes, overthrown by the driver of a van last August.
