On Monday, Democrats in the House of Representatives also filed a lawsuit against Trump's personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani. They have requested a long list of documents, including various calls, and notes that have been kept and made during the sensate year. Giuliani has until October 15 to hand over the documentation.

"Not likely"

The pressure on the president's staff seems to be increasing, but it should not be interpreted as an indication that Trump may actually be defeated if he is brought before state law, says Dag Blanck, professor of North American studies at Uppsala University.

- It's not likely. For him to be folded, a two-thirds majority in the Senate is needed and Republicans have their own majority, he tells SVT News.

Instead, he believes the Democrats felt it was necessary to start an investigation because the information that emerged is so serious.

"Want to speed up the process"

According to Dag Blanck, it will now take a couple of weeks while materials are collected. Then, the House of Representatives will decide whether to bring Trump to court and what, if so, to accuse him. After that, the decision to drop or free will be taken by the Senate.

- The Democrats will want to speed up the process. They will not benefit from having this process going at the same time as the election campaign, he says.

Will Trump be politically harmed by the process?

- There is no harm to his own faithful voters. They claim it's all a witch hunt and turn it over to Democrats to do this because they can't beat Trump in the election.

What would it take for Republican senators to vote to convict Trump in state court?

- When Clinton was brought before state law - and released - the senators voted according to the party line. With Nixon, it was never going to be national law but during the preparations it became obvious that it would go through in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Then Nixon chose to step down. There, the Republicans broke the party line.

"Such polarization today"

But Blanck says it is unlikely to happen today because the political climate has changed.

- There is such polarization today. There are no intermediate positions. Trump has also said and done a number of things that are exceptional, and people have been wondering if the time has come when he has gone too far. But it has not happened yet.
