The fishing association Jänkisjärvi has taken a firm hold of changing the view of the species and of raising the pike for the noble fishing family.

Do Jenkisjärviborna eat pike?

- Oh yeah! Pike are not junk fish, so you should not throw them away, but you save what you eat. We want people to start seeing the pike with different eyes.

How do you think it went?

- Well, many people have caught their eyes on the fish. It's only to look south where the pike is delicacy, but there they have trouble getting it.

Fishing should be accessible to all

Jenkisjärvisjön is known for its pike since the 16th century, which is why Hannu and Rytiniemi have also launched a project to make the lake easily accessible to everyone. Construction started in the spring and during the summer a road to a handicapped accessible ramp in front of the lake was completed. Sidewalks over ants are laid and two bridges over inlets and outlets are built.

- It has now become handicap-adapted and we have built bridges to make it easy for everyone to get here. In the future, we would like to make it possible for people to be able to live outside the marsh and camp here while they are fishing.

- The other villagers have been very helpful and everyone is in line. That's why it's been so fun to do this.
