Moroccan journalist Hajar Raissouni, 28, was sentenced on Monday (September 30th) to one year in prison for "illegal abortion" and "non-marital sex" by the Rabat court.

Arrested and tried at the same time, her gynecologist was sentenced to two years in prison, her one-year-old fiancé, a one-year suspended anesthesiologist and a suspended eight-month secretary.

Arrested late August at the entrance to a medical office in Rabat, the reporter had been "forced to do a medical examination without his agreement," she said. His lawyers equated this examination with "torture", pointing to "judicial police failures" and "fabricated evidence", and advocated for his release.

In a previous hearing, Ms. Raissouni, who denounces a "political" trial, denied any abortion, claiming to have been treated for internal bleeding, which her gynecologist confirmed in court.

Journalist with the Arabic -language daily Akhbar Al-Yaoum , Hajar Raissouni was risking up to two years in prison under the Moroccan Penal Code, which punishes sex outside marriage and abortion when the mother's life is not in danger.

Dozens of journalists and NGO representatives were present Monday in the crowded courtroom during the day.
