The American Institute USGS measures the quake to a magnitude of 6.8 - after revising it from the preliminary assessment 7.2. 7.2. At the same time, the institute considers that "the probability of accident victims and injuries is low". Chilean authorities write the magnitude to 6.7.

The earthquake occurred at a relatively shallow level, just under a mile.

There is no tsunami risk after the quake, according to the Chilean authorities and the international center following tsunami risks in the Pacific.
