The issue aroused great debate at the AGM, and several attorneys went up and defended the motion that wanted to make it illegal to circumcise boys.

"It is an abuse of another person," said Aron Larsson from Jönköping.

The party's deputy chairman Anders W Jonsson warned the meeting to adopt the proposal.

- Circumcision is the basis of two world religions. A ban will be interpreted as going against these groups of people who are already having a hard time and that we are against Judaism and Islam, he said.

- It's not about caring about boys' health. The reason is the fear of clashing with religious groups, said Josefin Silverfur from Stockholm County.

Marmorstein: "Quite surprising"

SVT's political reporter Elisabeth Marmorstein says the decision is quite surprising and one of the few moments that the AGM has run over the party board.

- Here the party board has a completely different line. You are afraid it should be interpreted as the Center Party going against Muslims and Jews if you choose to work for something that goes against their religion, says Elisabeth Marmorstein.
