As a teenager in the 90s, Karen Winther was a part of violent right-wing extremist environments.

- For many years I kept my past secret. But when violent extremism is mentioned or terrorist attacks occur, I feel bad, she says in the documentary Exit.

In the film, Karen Winther seeks out several former extremists, in order to get answers, among other things, on how they managed to leave extremism - and how they handle the blame and shame today.

Long road to reconciliation

Among those she meets include former neo-Nazi Ingo Hasselbach in Germany, who in the 90s inspired Karen Winther to leave extremism herself.

Ingo Hasselbach believes that it has taken a long time for him to reconcile himself with his history.

- Every day is a struggle. It's not over yet. I think you can get pulled with it all your life, ”he says.
