In the Swedish Transport Administration's national plan, which states how to invest 2018-2029, the authority notes that there has been "a clear improvement of the condition of roads in metropolitan areas". At the same time, it is clear that the condition of the low-traffic roads has developed negatively.

As for road type 5 (roads that are important for the countryside) and road type 6 (low-traffic roads), the authority's own assessment is that the situation will deteriorate in the coming years and further deviate from the maintenance standard for paved roads.

"Not okay"

The most disadvantaged are the low-traffic roads in Västerbotten and Norrbotten, according to the Motormännen National Association. There is also a significant difference in quality between north and south and poorer roads in the forest and sparsely populated counties, they write in their annual Road Quality Report from 2019.

The organization is just about to end this year's survey of Sweden's road network, which includes the major roads where it is believed that a high standard can be expected. But already the Motormännen states that not much has changed.

- We argue this year after year. It is not acceptable for it to be this way, ”press secretary Gunnel Cirverius tells SVT News.

- In general, we have high road safety in Sweden but that it is worse northbound is not okay. This leads to impaired road safety when roads are not maintained but also increased operating costs for the state. And, purely from a socio-economic point of view, this means greater costs for all transport.

Priority is given to high-traffic roads

It is the Swedish Transport Administration that is responsible for the maintenance and maintenance of the state road network. A large survey conducted by SVT, covering 26 per cent of the roads, shows that over 15,000 curves on Swedish highways are incorrectly designed - built so that there are great difficulties as drivers to manage, even if the speed limit is kept.

At present, the authority conducts road safety work on roads with road numbers less than 100 and other road sections with an annual daily traffic measurement of over 4,000 cars per day. That is, bigger and more well-traveled roads. According to the Swedish Transport Administration, 67 percent of today's traffic on roads is very good or good safety class, which in turn comprises 33 percent of the total road network.

Of the roads that SVT has investigated, the majority of the malformed curves, almost 14,000, are found on roads that are not included in the Swedish Transport Administration's work on the Zero Vision.

- The further we get into the capillaries of the road network, the more responsibility lies on the individual because the road system looks as it does. Our ambition is to reach all the way, but we have to take it in the right order, says Maria Krafft, traffic safety director at the Swedish Transport Administration to SVT News.
