The tax on taxes was introduced in 1995 in a Sweden characterized by the financial crisis to help cover the central government debt. The tax means that those who earn the most, currently over SEK 703,000 per year, pay 5 percent more in tax on the excess amount.

L: "The state loses money on tax on taxes"

The idea was that the protection tax would be temporary, but it has been around for almost 25 years. Now, however, it will be abandoned, something the Liberals have been pushing for. With that, the state goes misery about six billion in tax revenue per year.

- The protection tax is unfair and it causes the state to lose money. We have lost about 200 billion in revenue when people have chosen not to work that extra hour for the last hundred dollars to go to the state, ”says Nyamko Sabuni in Aktuellt.

- It is only when money comes into the state that we can raise welfare. We must prioritize lowering taxes that hamper growth, she continues.

KD: "We want to invest in welfare"

The Christian Democrats' Ebba Busch Thor emphasizes that her party instead wants to invest in welfare as a health service and the police. She does not agree that there will be more money for the state if the tax is removed.

- High-income earners put money on high when they get a little extra. They do not spend them and run the economy as low- and middle-income earners do, she says.

Turn around the world

According to SVT's political commentator Mats Knutsson, the inverted world is in politics when two former alliance parties stand on different sides on this issue and accuse each other of being socialist.

- To me, it is incomprehensible how to support a Social Democratic Prime Minister and then only lower the tax for those with the highest incomes. At the same time we are heading into a recession, says Ebba Busch Thor.

- For me, it is even more incomprehensible for me to stand and debate with a bourgeois politician who reason in the same way that socialist parties do. That is - more to welfare but not at the same time thinking about how we create resources to finance that welfare, says Nyamko Sabuni.
