26 September 2019In view of the Friday for Future that will be celebrated tomorrow around the world, Environment Minister Sergio Costa spoke in Italy, returning to the problem of the climate emergency. An environmental damage that is increasing more and more: part of the Planpincieux glacier, on the Grandes Jorasses, along the Italian side of the Mont Blanc massif, could collapse. The mass at risk is about 250 thousand cubic meters.

"We are following the situation on the Mont Blanc together with the Valle d'Aosta region, the element is symbolic because the problem concerns glaciers. There is a worrying situation, there is a climatic emergency and everybody has noticed it" he explains Costa on the sidelines of a press conference at the Anci headquarters - National Association of Italian Municipalities -.

This is the reason for the environmental decree that the minister will soon propose to the Council of Ministers, after the postponement of last September 19th. "I hope that the decree can go to the Council of Ministers on October 3, the coverage is there but must be compared with the Budget Law". A law decree considered "urgent" by Minister Costa, because "if there is a climate emergency there is also a legislative emergency".

The minister recalls the IPCC report which highlighted among other devastating consequences, including that of the melting of glaciers and explains that the decree is "a necessity and an urgency for a strong and coordinated action for the climate, to avert the occurrence of extreme events that risk having dramatic consequences ".

So in a week's time the hopeful Minister Costa hopes that the decree can end at the Council of Ministers, "with the Parliament which can then enrich it". An urgent provision therefore, not a bill, "something that is immediately applicable and then rediscovered in this year's stability law", said Costa this morning on the microphones of Radio Anch'io.

Minister Sergio Costa wanted to have the climate regulations approved as early as 19 September, but other ministers had pointed out that some of the rules (in particular the cut of environmentally harmful subsidies) contained should be studied more thoroughly, in coordination with other dicasteries . For now, the node of resources connected to the decree remains, above all because, in these days, there will be the first meetings to go into the merits of the maneuver.
