An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale jolted Istanbul on Thursday noon, Turkish authorities said. In Indonesia, 20 people died as a result of a stronger earthquake. Pakistan also witnessed a new earthquake two days after dozens of people were killed and injured in an earthquake that hit the east of the country.

The Department of Disaster and Emergency Turkish that five aftershocks after the earthquake, and that led to the interruption of wireless communications, and no casualties or material damage so far.

Residents of Istanbul took to the streets after the strong tremor. Reuters said the quake damaged a mosque and some offices and schools were temporarily evacuated.

The earthquake occurred at 1:59 pm local time, the Kandili Earthquake Observatory said.

He said the epicenter was about 70 km west of Istanbul in the Marmara Sea south of Silivri town, adding that the tremor was 12.6 km deep.

On Twitter, Istanbul Mayor Akram Emamoglu wrote that he had not yet received reports of damage or casualties.

CNN Turk broadcast a video showing the collapse of the upper part of the minaret at the central mosque in Avcılar district. It was unclear whether the collapse had caused casualties or other damage.

It is noteworthy that the Turkish city of Izmir was hit in 1999 by a magnitude 7.6 earthquake; killing more than 17 thousand people.

In Indonesia, it was announced on Thursday that 20 people were killed and more than 100 others injured in an earthquake hit the island of Seram.

The quake measured 6.8 on the Richter scale and damaged dozens of houses, government buildings and a bridge, while search and rescue work continued in the area.

According to the Indonesian Meteorological, Climate and Geophysics Agency, the epicenter of the quake was 40 kilometers northeast of the city of Seram, at a depth of 10 kilometers underground.

In Pakistan, an earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale hit the eastern part of the country on Thursday morning, causing panic among residents, authorities said.

The news agency quoted the French news agency that the tremor, which occurred today in the Kashmir city of Mirpur
"Resembling an underground wave."

On Tuesday, Pakistan witnessed an earthquake measuring 5.2 degrees, killing 38 people and wounded 500.

Near Mirpur, a number of roads were destroyed, enormous craters spread, vehicles overturned, and bridges and columns severely damaged.

Pakistan is on the border between the tectonic plates of India and Eurasia, so it remains vulnerable to earthquakes.

On October 8, 2005, more than 73,000 people were killed and some 3.5 million others lost their homes after a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck on the border between Pakistani Kashmir and the neighboring state of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
