Taking a curve at too high a speed can cause problems. 1100 curves in the county are incorrectly designed according to a survey conducted by SVT News and Assignment Review. The risk of accidents is greater in these than in curves that do not have the same problems.

It's about something called side friction problems. The combination of how sharp the curve is and how much the road slopes sideways makes it difficult to keep the car on the road at the speed that applies on the road.

- In Västerbotten County there is most road in the whole country, but you get the least money so the roads are very neglected, says Kjell Jonsson at Motormännen in Västerbotten.

Compared to the neighboring counties, there are almost twice as many curves in Västerbotten that are incorrectly designed - Västernorrland (563), Jämtland (488) and Norrbotten (575).

New roads are built differently

Kjell Jonsson has just test-run the county's roads and testifies that many road users are driving far too fast. In combination with a poorly designed road, the risk of an accident occurring increases.

It is the Swedish Transport Administration that is responsible for the maintenance and maintenance of the state road network. According to the authority, new roads are built in a different way than before and do not have the same problems with the curves.

Fixing the existing faulty curves is not a priority. Instead, priority is given to, for example, building meeting-free roads and other efforts to prevent serious accidents. Road users on older road sections are expected to adjust the speed instead.

- In the old road network ... the speed limit that is there is a maximum level. It is not so that you can drive the same speed there on straight as in curve, says Maria Krafft, target director at the Swedish Transport Administration.
