24 September 2019 "We are facing the alarming possibility of armed conflicts in the Gulf, with consequences that the world cannot afford". The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, said this at the opening of the 74th UN General Assembly at the Glass Palace. "The recent attack on Saudi Arabia's oil facilities is completely unacceptable - he added - in a context where a small miscalculation can lead to a great confrontation. We must do everything we can to push on reason and moderation".

Guterres then spoke of the need to rethink global disarmament policies and said: "In the short term it is necessary to extend the 'New Start' agreement. We must work to address the increased threat of ballistic missiles and ensure a positive review in the 2020 of the Treaty of no
proliferation of nuclear weapons ". Guterres also said he presented a new disarmament agenda to advance global peace and then stated:" The situation on the Korean peninsula remains uncertain. Efforts should be fully supported towards a new summit between the American president and the North Korean leader "

Demonstrators outside the palace
Meanwhile, dozens of people are demonstrating outside the glass building to protest against Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who was added to the agenda as the first of the series of planned interventions of the UN General Assembly after the report by Secretary General Antonio Guterres. Activists display a Brazilian leader's dummy and shout slogans defending the Amazon.

Another group of protesters is protesting, instead, against the Iranian regime, accusing it of violating human rights and calling for a change of regime, but by the Iranians themselves.
