The British Supreme Court has ruled that it was wrong for Boris Johnson to close Parliament. And the reactions did not wait.

Joanna Cherry, MP for the Scottish National Party, told us what she thought of Johnson just outside the court.

"He should have the courage to do what is decent and resign for once," she told the news agency AP.

"A parliament should never be silenced"

Deputy Speaker John Becrow said in a written statement that he welcomed the court's ruling that it was illegal to close Parliament.

Guy Verhofstadt, the EU's Brexit negotiator, writes on Twitter that the court's decision is a relief. “A parliament should never be silenced in a real democracy. I never want to hear Boris Johnson or any other Brexitist claim that the EU is undemocratic, "he writes.

Tory rebel Dominic Grieve says Boris Johnson has behaved insanely over the past eight weeks.

- If I were in his position, I would resign, he says according to The Independent.

Corbyn calls it abuse of power

When Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn was reached by the message, he said that Boris Johnson's actions "demonstrated a contempt for democracy" and accused him of abuse of power.

"I will now demand that Parliament be recalled immediately so that we can answer the Prime Minister," he said in a speech to party comrades.

Jo Swinson, party leader for the Liberal Democrats, also says Johnson should step down.

"He has led the Queen and the country behind the light and has in a criminal way silenced the people's representatives," she says.

President John Bercow says Parliament's work will resume tomorrow on Wednesday.
