Åke Nilsson was a municipal councilor in Vilhelmina at the time, today he works at the Public Employment Service. He remembers the year when the municipality got to power. First, the municipality investigated the possibilities that another company could take over the saw, but that was not the case.

"Of course, there were rings all over society," says Åke Nilsson.

The closure of the saw also affected other companies, such as the Vilhelmina trade.

- It became immediately noticeable to us. The guys used to come in and buy something almost every day. Now they put their money in other municipalities, so it has become noticeable to Vilhelmina in many other ways than just on the saw itself, says Stefan Kvist, the owner of Vilhelmina.

The premises became an environmental station

When more than six years have passed since the workplace was closed, new businesses have taken up the area. The municipality has set up an environmental station under the metal roofs that previously protected the timber from the weather.

- I remember how many thoughts there were in the beginning when you became unemployed, says Alf Borgström, who started working at the saw in the 1980s.

Today, he is back in the same place, now employed by the municipality at the environmental station, and according to Alf Borgström, many of his colleagues have been forced to move or weekly commutes to other jobs for a long time.

In the clip above, you hear Alf tell when he was told that the saw would be shut down - and what happened next.
