France, Britain and Germany said in a joint statement after a summit in New York that brought together French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, it was clear that Iran was responsible for the attack on Saudi Aramco oil facilities in Saudi Arabia last Saturday.

"It is clear to us that Iran bears responsibility for these attacks," the leaders said in a joint statement after a trilateral meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

"The attacks highlight the need to stop the escalation in the region through continued diplomatic efforts and engagement with all parties," they said, noting that it was time for Iran to accept a framework for long-term negotiations over its nuclear program.

The joint statement also called on Iran to agree to negotiate its nuclear and missile programs and regional security issues.

Iran has taken several steps, including installing more sophisticated centrifuges than allowed, as a way to express its anger over the failure to implement the deal to ease sanctions.
