The moose in Sweden cannot be accurately counted, but according to the Jägereförbundet they are estimated at between 300,000 and 400,000 animals. They have become fewer in recent decades and this is worrying about the Hunters' Association.

More sales in the forest

In August, they launched the campaign "Save the Elk". They want the moose to grow more by increasing the supply of food, that is to say, there is more berry, pine, aspen and sales in the forests.

One of the aims of the campaign is also to create better cooperation between the landowners and the hunters on how the moose strain is to be regulated. Among other things, it is about how many moose to shoot during the hunt.

- You need to work with all means, both off-balance and food supply in balance. There are two cranes to turn to get the moose trunk where we want it, says Jonas Paulsson, chairman of the Jägareförbundet Skåne.

"Don't point fingers"

One question that both the Hunters' Association and researchers point out is that too much spruce has been planted in the forest, something that the elk do not eat. It is a tradition that the campaign should break.

- We do not want to point fingers and say that someone has done wrong, but just focus on the moose's vulnerability. Collaboration and meeting these issues are important. Already the campaign has created a discussion and put the issue on the agenda, says Magnus Rydholm, Head of Communications at the Swedish Jägareförbundet.
