Behind the event are the sports environmental organization Städa Sweden and Pantamera. During Saturday, 83 associations clean along the coast, lakes and streams.

- We see that the attitude to commitment to nature and the environment is becoming more and more positive among young people. Today, you are proud to participate in this kind of effort where you do something concrete for the environment, says Anton Hedlund, in a press release.

The garbage collected is sorted and categorized. Last year, 5.7 million cigarette smokes, 3.72 million food packaging and 3.66 million straws were collected internationally, says Returpack.

A lot of plastic in the archipelago

In Sweden, tobacco, food packaging and plastic bags are the most common garbage. A picture shared by Thomas Johansson, who for several years collected garbage in the East Gothic archipelago.

- It's mostly PET bottles and plastic bags that I find, he tells SVT News.

A few years ago he joined a group on social media, to find more people who want to join and pick up junk.

- Some have been involved from the beginning, but then more are added, so we are growing, he says.

Beach Cleans Map

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, together with some coastal municipalities, has also started a joint project to clean the beaches along the coast.

By using flags in a map, you can show where you have cleaned or where efforts are needed to reduce our beaches.
