September 21, 2019The Egyptian police used tear gas to disperse hundreds of people who had gathered in Tahrir Square in Cairo to protest against the government of President Abdelfettah Al Sisi. AlJ azeera writes that several protesters have been arrested. Tahrir Square is the symbol of the Egyptian Arab Spring: here in 2011 millions of people gathered to dismiss then-President Hosni Mubarak.

The protesters gathered the appeal launched on social media in recent days by an Egyptian businessman, Mohamed Ali, exiled in Europe, who accused the president himself and several corruption generals. According to witnesses to AnsaA, security forces have blocked all access roads to the square. Some young protesters coming out of the square claim that some of them have been arrested.

Some videos released on social media, whose authenticity cannot be verified, show similar manifestations in several other cities, such as Alexandria, Suez, Mahallah and Damietta. Sisi left today for New York, where he will speak on Wednesday at the UN General Assembly.

A video posted on social media shows protesters in Damietta while they break down a banner with a photograph of President Abdel Fattah al Sisi.
