Peter Wolodarski says the magazine has guidelines for public opinion advertising in DN - but that this advertisement fell within the scope of what they approve.

- The basic attitude is to be as liberal as possible against the opinions expressed in advertising space. This does not mean that the arguments will not be met over time, he says.

The ad was tried

According to him, the newspaper has done a review of the ad and concluded that it could be passed through.

There are wording in the advertisement that Hong Kong is "open" and that the Chinese-controlled administration in Hong Kong supports the principle of "one country - two systems". These are claims that China has made in the past - and that at the same time, the protest movement in Hong Kong says it is not true.

- I thought the ad was in line with how Hong Kong's management is already expressing itself. So I saw it as part of the public debate, ”says Peter Wolodarski.

Do you see any problem with it being an authoritarian regime you allow in your newspaper?

- We have asked ourselves this question, if we should have a policy against authoritarian regimes being allowed to advertise in the newspaper. But the more we exclude, the more we tighten the liberal attitude we want.

He emphasizes that he thinks it is important that everyone gets to speak, even if we do not like what is being said.
