On Facebook, the family of the former Tunisian president announced, Thursday, September 19, his death. Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali was 83 years old.

Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali led Tunisia for more than 23 years. He had succeeded Habib Ben Ali Bourguiba in November 1987.

He left power in January 2011, driven by angry protests in his country. He had been the first head of state swept away by the "Arab Spring".
