First meeting of the government for the realization of the all-generation social security system September 20, 5:34

On the 20th, the government will hold the first meeting of a new conference that will become a command tower in order to realize the all-generation social security system. Looking ahead to 2022 when the so-called baby-boom generation begins to turn 75, the focus will be on how far the discussion of reform will proceed.

As social security costs continue to increase due to the rapid declining birthrate and aging population, the government will newly establish the “All-Generation Social Security Review Conference” as a command tower for reform and hold the first meeting on the 20th.

The meeting will be chaired by Prime Minister Abe. In addition to the relevant ministers, there will be nine experts including Keidanren Chairman Hiroaki Nakanishi and former Keio President Atsushi Seike.

Each expert will appoint representatives of relevant governmental meetings such as the Economic and Fiscal Advisory Council and the Social Security System Reform Promotion Council to exchange opinions from a professional standpoint such as social security and economics.

Regarding the meeting, Prime Minister Abe said earlier, “Promote work opportunities up to the age of 70, expand options for pension start age, and social security in general, including medical and nursing care.” It is expected to become a theme.

On the other hand, the minister in charge of economic revitalization in charge of the meeting has expressed the idea that priority is given only to the reduction of benefits for the purpose of sound fiscal consolidation and discussions on further raising the consumption tax rate from 10%.

Focusing on 2022 when the baby boomer's generation begins to become a senior citizen over 75 years old, the focus will be on how far the discussion of reform will proceed.
