The salmon day at Ljungan only attracted a few visitors, but those who were there were told that the state of the salmon in the river remains poor.

Although this year's electric fishing surveys have shown that the salmon have played and that there are salmon cubs in the river, but this is only a fraction of the quantities that existed a few years ago. At the same time, the result is clearly better than last year when you did not catch a single salmon kid which injects a certain hope.

Predict increase next year

- This year we have caught salmon kids which is positive. We hope that the number of yearlings will increase during the next year and that there will be more salmon fun, says David Jonsson at the County Administrative Board in Västernorrland.

Right now there is a total fishing ban for salmon in Ljungan and this is a situation that looks to continue well into the future.

The ban remains

- My assessment is that the fishing ban will remain for years to come and even a year after that, says David Jonsson.

What causes the salmon in Ljungan and many other rivers to die is still unclear.

However, studies show that the Baltic Sea salmon generally exhibits different disease states that make the fish weaken. There are suspicions that contamination may be the underlying reason why salmon are not feeling well.
