18 September 2019 According to Istat data, in July the economic downturn in industry turnover continues with -0.5% compared to the previous month and -0.6% compared to June 2018, with negative results both for the internal component (-0.6%) and for foreign (-0.4%). In the average of the last three months, on the other hand, there is a slightly positive change (+ 0.3%) supported in particular by capital goods, compared to the average of the previous three months.

Among the sectors of manufacturing activities we note the positive trend of the food and beverage industry. Even net of the price component, the manufacturing sector shows a cyclical downturn on a monthly basis and a modest increase on a quarterly basis.

With reference to the main groupings of industries, in July the seasonally adjusted turnover indices show cyclical increases of 3.1% for energy and 0.2% for consumer goods. Negative changes were recorded for intermediate goods (-0.3%) and for capital goods (-2.4%).

Within the manufacturing sector, the food sector records the most significant trend growth
(+ 4.9%), while the pharmaceutical industry shows the greatest decline (-10.9%). In terms of trends, the raw order index decreased by 1.0%, a summary of a slight increase on the domestic market (+ 0.3%) and a marked decline on the foreign market (-2.9%). The greatest trend growth is recorded in electrical equipment (+ 8.8%), while the worst result is found in the transport vehicle industry (-11.9%).
