Following an anonymous tip, on Thursday, Jönköping Municipality's environmental and health protection management carried out a check on an unknown and unregistered facility for them. And there, the municipality discovered thousands of kilos of illegal lamb meat that were stored in an inappropriate way.

- It was a fairly large room where they stored a lot of meat. The storage and handling was not suitable, not the premises either, says Johanna Hänninen, unit manager at the environmental and health protection administration in Jönköping municipality.

According to the municipality, it is uncertain whether the meat is dangerous to eat or not. But it cannot be guaranteed. The municipality then decided to cancel the business operations for the time being, close the premises and destroy all meat. Seven tonnes of meat were found in the room, five tonnes were immediately destroyed.

The meat comes from Romania

The Environmental and Health Protection Administration believes that the meat comes from Romania and has been sold to operations in Gothenburg and Borås. The food inspectors there have removed the meat after being warned by Jönköping Municipality.

- We have also sent warning messages to all other Swedish municipalities and also other regulatory authorities, says Johanna Hänninen.

Is this criminal?

- Yes, it is a violation of the Food Act

Have you made a police report?

- No, we haven't made a police report. We must decide on that.
