17 September 2019The European Parliament voted its approval of Christine Lagarde president of the ECB with 394 votes in favor, 206 against and 49 abstentions (among them M5S MEPs). The deputies of the PD voted in favor. Immediately afterwards, the MEPs voted in favor of the number two of the Banking Supervisory Board Yves Mersch with 379 yes, 230 no and 69 abstentions.

"We have tried with all our strength to find even just a reason to support Christine Lagarde's presidency at the ECB, unfortunately without success. Because Lagarde was jointly responsible for all those policies that have dramatically increased public debt in the European Union just to save private banks, and once the public debt has grown, the austerity policies that then became structural reforms have been justified, those that Dombrovskis talked about earlier, and this means: compression of wages, cuts of services and cuts in pensions: a gigantic redistribution work from the bottom up, where the rich have become richer and the poor are getting poorer, now they come to say that they are wrong and that they will change, but it is too late. We will not give our trust to Christine Lagarde, let us wait first to see that the changes are real and then perhaps we can discuss them again. " Thus in the House in Strasbourg the MEP of the 5 Star Movement Piernicola Pedicini had announced the abstention of the M5S on the appointment of Christine Lagarde as President of the ECB.
