In the United States, the 46,000 General Motors workers are on strike after the failure of negotiations with the management of the group. The automobile union is trying to block the announced closure of some factories.

The ultimatum was fixed at midnight. Since then, General Motors workers have been on strike. The first of its kind for twelve years. It had been two months since the union and the management were trying to reach an agreement. Yesterday again, General Motors assured to have " made a very good offer " including a $ 7 billion investment.

The proposal was considered insufficient. The union, United Auto Workers , calls for better working conditions, higher wages, better social protection. Above all, they want to save some factories from closure and get guarantees on job security.

Negotiations in neutral

The car group had announced the closure of two facilities in Detroit, Michigan, and Lordstown, Ohio. These decisions are unacceptable, according to the union, which states that General Motors has made a profit of $ 35 billion over the past three years.

The negotiations seem to be stalled for the moment. And even if the management and the union agree, it may be difficult to get the approval of employees. Because the car union is itself under pressure. Some of its leaders are suspected of misappropriating union money, others allegedly accepted bribes from automakers. At least 9 people have already been arrested by the FBI and pleaded guilty.
