Between January and July, there were 182 shootings in Sweden. This is an increase compared to the same period last year, when the figure was 164 shootings in the country.

Today, NFC has a queue time of 90-120 days to carry out firearms and weapons analyzes. The long processing times have been criticized and now the police want to try to change that by starting a pilot project.

Reduced processing time

After talks with the US police, NFC now wants to look for a method used in New Jersey. There, the processing time for firearms analyzes has been reduced from ten months to 48 hours.

- There they have clear coordination, do all track fuse at once and focus on the speed, says Mikael Högfors, head of the weapons group, NFC in Linköping.

Faster results and less scope

The method means that the results are faster, but also that the scope is smaller.

- If the investigators are satisfied with a smaller part of the result and they want speed before scale, then it is clear that we must try it, says Mikael Högfors.

Does the method involve any risks to legal certainty?

- That project will show. Usually we deliver more comprehensive results, so it should hold in a trial. But if the investigators are satisfied, then we must adapt.
