The Audience of Barcelona will judge next week Sajjad M., 32 years old and Pakistani nationality, for allegedly sexually abusing a 9-year-old child between September and November 2017. According to the tax brief, the prosecution was the magnet of a mosque located in the Sants-Montjuïc district of Barcelona since January of that year to which minors went to pray and receive Koran classes.

Among them was the victim, a boy who was then 9 years old, who went regularly every day in the afternoon. According to the prosecutor, the defendant allegedly took advantage of "the relationship of trust" and "moral ancestry" with the child, since it was the imam of the mosque, to put him in a mosque sink, undress and sexually abuse him , first with touches and then with penetration.

The Public Ministry details that the defendant allegedly "frightened the child by warning him not to say anything to his parents and sometimes gave him money for this purpose" so that he did not explain these sexual assaults.

The last time he allegedly did so was on November 11, 2017 and after that episode the child explained the situation to the family that reported the sexual assaults to the police. As of November 17, the defendant is in provisional detention.

The Prosecutor's Office asks for 12 years in prison for the imam as well as his expulsion from the national territory once he meets three quarters of the sentence. In addition, he claims that after jail he carries out a sentence of 10 years of probation and that he cannot exercise a profession or activity related to minors for five years.

He also claims that he compensates the family of the minor with 60,000 euros for moral damages, an amount that the Pakistani religious association that houses the mosque will respond in a subsidiary manner. The trial will be held next week at the Audience of Barcelona and the insurance company that has the policy contracted with the Pakistani cultural entity will also be represented, since in case of conviction it should face payments for civil liability.
