The European women's golf team won the Solheim Cup beating the US doubles champions 14.5 to 13.5 on Sunday with Sweden's Suzann Pettersen winning the final on Sunday. in Gleneagles.
Pettersen, a young mother who had not played much in the last two years and whose invitation by Captain Catriona Matthew raised questions, birdied the 18th and final hole to beat American Marina Alex 1-up.
This is the tightest result in the history of this biennial Europe-USA competition, and the first success of the Old Continent since 2013. The Americans lead with ten victories against six against the Europeans.
Pettersen, 38, who was playing her 9th Solheim Cup, announced that she was ending her professional career: "The dream has come true and I am ending my professional career and the Solheim Cup. delighted to know the joy of winning as a mom! "
